Mobile Virtual Network Operators (MVNOs) in the UK are slowly entering the 5G era. Historically, MVNOs have been behind the big operators in terms of approaching and implementing new generations.
For example, in 4G there was an extended lag between when the host Operator offered 4G to its retail customers versus when it was offered to MVNOs. In fact, 4G was made available to MVNOs 12 months after their host MNO released it to their customers.
In effect, MVNOs experienced some adverse consequences. Most importantly, MNOs leveraged their network control to keep high-spending data customers to themselves which resulted in a significant decrease in MVNO customer retention and engagement. However, this appears to have changed with 5G.
